Hailing from Berkeley, California, Hazy Portraits is an alternative rock four-piece built for late nights, loud rooms, and the kind of memories that get a little blurrier every time you try to replay them. Their music crashes together the grit of the ’90s, the effortless cool of the Y2K era, shimmering shoegaze, sharp-edged indie rock, and the reckless pulse of straight-up rock ’n’ roll.

The band is led by Luis on lead guitar and vocals, alongside Nick on guitar and vocals, Van on bass, and Joel on rhythm guitar. Together, they create dense layers of guitar, driving low end, infectious rhythms, and melodies that can feel dreamy one second and explosive the next. Luis and Nick trade vocal duties throughout the band’s music, giving the songs different perspectives and personalities while Joel and Van keep everything charging underneath the noise.
There’s nostalgia in Hazy Portraits, but this isn’t a band interested in simply recreating another era. Their music takes familiar textures and bends them into something immediate: distorted guitars glowing around the edges, hooks buried inside walls of sound, and the sense that everything might come apart at exactly the right moment.
It’s music that belongs equally in a packed East Bay basement, a sweaty San Francisco club, or blasting through the speakers at 2 a.m. while nobody in the car is ready to go home.
For Psyched! Records, Hazy Portraits represents another piece of the incredibly fertile guitar-music community currently growing across the Bay Area—young artists absorbing decades of alternative music while building something that belongs distinctly to right now.
